Gnutiken?

Gnutiken is a cooperative in Göteborg, Sweden, that delivers solutions around Free Software, ranging from hardware and courses to consulting and support.

Gnutiken is a for-profit NGO with idealistic goals and shall
a) promote Free Software and related ideas such as openness, accessibility and cooperation, and
b) work for greener IT and a sustainable technological development.

Free Software?

In principle it is all about four small, but important, freedoms or rights. These are that everyone can share, study, modify and distribute the software. Even though the advantages of having the freedom to change the source code of a computer program aren't always obvious for those of us who do not program ourselves, the mere possibility itself has far reaching consequences for us all.

In practice these freedoms mean that the development and distribution of the software happen in a democratic way. When monopolies and the interest of single corporations are allowed to dictate the software, there will often be a lot of functions that are not in their customers' best interest. With Free Software, you can be certain that it has been made to solve its users' problem and not the problems of the software company's stock holders.

Green IT?

Unfortunately, there is no production of electronics that can be said to be environmentally friendly. With Free Software, however, there are several aspects that can help reducing the negative consequences for the environment.

Reusability
When a computer feels slow, it is usually the software that is the problem. There are a lot of Free operating systems and resource friendly applications that are made for older hardware.

Energy efficiency
Since the Linux kernel is Free, anyone can adapt it to fit more energy efficient processors. As such, there are several computers running GNU/Linux that use very little energy.

Paper saving
With Free Software, all data is saved in open formats, so that it is as easy as possible to open your files in another application than that which it was created in. This results in an efficient data flow, where you can transfer your data freely without taking the route via paper.
